How to Learn a Second Language
Here are some practical tips that will help.
  • Learning a second language is just like learning to play a sport or play a musical instrument.  It takes practice and dedication.  You will not learn it in 60-90 minutes, 5 days a week, for two years.
  • Pick a language that interests you.
    • To be successful at learning a new language you must have a need or desire to learn it.  .
  • Learn about the people who speak the language.
  • Travel to a country or area of your country, where the language is spoken.
  • Make flash cards for new vocabulary and review them daily.
  • Take advantage of radio, television and video.
    • Limit your time to a maximum of 30 minutes at one sitting.
  • Check out magazines and newspapers printed in the new language.
    • Don't try to understand every word.  Look at surrounding pictures, focus on key words and do some intelligent guessing.
  • Investigate web sites in the target language.
    • Search for online newspapers, universities and commercial sites.
    • Check into email penpals from other countries

Be careful and always get your parents' approval and never give out any personal information without parental approval.

  • Check your Language Department's Web Site for online tutorials and practice activities.

  • Look for commercial software and shareware in the target language.

If you have any further suggestions that you feel would help others, please forward them to the Language Department Webmaster.
